The podcast
Nobody plans a life in medicine.
A long form interview podcast hosted by Associate Professor Kenneth Cutbush. Unhurried conversations with surgeons, physiotherapists, researchers, biomedical engineers, nurses and trainees about the path that brought them here, what it asked of them, and what they would tell someone standing at the start of it.

No script and no clock. Just a proper conversation about a career most people only ever see from the outside. Guests talk about why they chose medicine, what it cost them, and the moments that nearly ended it.
Dr Cutbush is well placed to ask. He began training in neurosurgery, left it, and then trained in orthopaedics, which is a reminder that very few careers in medicine run in a straight line.
It is made for people already working in healthcare and for anyone considering it. Students and trainees tend to get the most out of it.
At a glance
Nothing in the podcast is clinical guidance. For questions about your own shoulder, see the shoulder information pages or arrange a consultation.
Changing direction, starting with little, leaving home to train, living as a patient, mentorship, and whether the career was worth it.
