A guest on The Ortho Show
Dr Kenneth Cutbush was a guest on The Ortho Show, hosted by Dr Scott Sigman. The episode is available at theorthoshow.com and on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
About the podcast
The Ortho Show is an orthopaedic podcast that interviews surgeons about their careers, their approach to practice and developments in their subspecialty.
Formats of this kind have become a normal part of continuing education in orthopaedics, and they do something that the older formats cannot. A journal article reports a result. A conference talk presents a position in ten minutes. A long interview allows the reasoning behind a practice to be set out at length, including the things surgeons rarely write down: how a particular habit developed, what they changed their mind about and why, and how a career was actually built as distinct from how it reads on a curriculum vitae.
Why surgeons speak publicly about their work
Much of what the public hears about orthopaedic surgery arrives either through advertising or through second hand anecdote. A recorded conversation between surgeons is a different kind of source. It tends to be more careful about uncertainty, because the audience includes people who will notice an overstated claim and say so.
For patients and for referring doctors, hearing a specialist discuss their field at length gives a sense of how decisions are actually made: what is weighed up before an operation is offered, which problems have reliable surgical answers and which do not, and where the genuine disagreements within the subspecialty lie. Individual results vary, and a general discussion of this kind is no substitute for the assessment of a particular shoulder.
