About the Mater Public Hospital

The Mater Public Hospital is part of the Mater group of hospitals at South Brisbane, which has both public and private facilities on the one campus. It is a teaching hospital, which means that alongside treating patients it takes part in the training of medical students, junior doctors and specialist registrars.

Why public hospital work matters in orthopaedics

Orthopaedic surgeons in Australia commonly work across both public and private hospitals. Public hospital lists carry a different mix of work from private practice, including trauma and more complex reconstructive cases, and they are where most specialist training takes place. Registrars learn by assisting, then by operating under supervision, and that only happens where consultant surgeons are present and teaching.

Working alongside another shoulder surgeon on the same campus also has a practical value. Two surgeons who approach the same problem differently will compare notes on technique, implant choice and positioning, and that discussion is more direct than it can be at a conference. Individual results vary.

The other part of it is simply continuity. A public hospital unit builds up a body of shared practice over years, in the way an operating list is organised, the way patients are followed up and the way difficult cases are discussed, and that is passed on to each group of trainees who pass through it.
