A reunion at SESA

Good to catch up with many of the fellows at the Shoulder & Elbow Society of Australia (SESA) conference.

What SESA is

The Shoulder and Elbow Society of Australia is the national specialty society for surgeons whose practice centres on the shoulder and elbow. Its annual conference is where Australian members present their research, discuss cases and hear from invited speakers, and it doubles as the yearly meeting point for a group of surgeons who are otherwise scattered across the country and working in separate hospitals. Subspecialty societies of this kind matter in a country the size of Australia, where the number of surgeons working on any one joint is small and most of them practise a long way from each other.

The fellowship programme

The Australian Shoulder Research Institute (ASRI) funds three orthopaedic surgeons each year for twelve-month fellowships with Dr Cutbush and Dr Ashish Gupta. Over time that produces a network of shoulder surgeons practising across several countries, which is why these reunions have a reasonable turnout.

A fellowship is the stage of training that comes after a surgeon has already qualified as an orthopaedic surgeon. General orthopaedic training covers the whole skeleton, so a surgeon intending to concentrate on one area spends a further year working alongside surgeons who do nothing else. The fellow operates, runs clinics, follows patients through their recovery and takes part in the unit's research. The point of a full twelve months is exposure: a fellow sees the uncommon presentations and the revision cases that a general list would not supply in that volume, and sees how they are decided rather than only how they are operated on. Individual results vary in every case, which is part of what a fellow learns to assess.
