About the episode
Dr Kenneth Cutbush hosts this episode of the AOA Podcast, which covers the purpose, people and projects shaping the Academy of Clinical Excellence in Orthopaedics.
The Australian Orthopaedic Association
The Australian Orthopaedic Association is the national body for orthopaedic surgeons in Australia. It oversees orthopaedic training, accredits subspecialty fellowship programmes, sets the requirements for continuing professional development, and administers the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry, which records joint replacement operations performed in Australia and the revision procedures that follow them.
What the Academy is for
The Academy's stated aim is to support orthopaedic training and care in Australia. Bodies of this kind generally work on the parts of practice that sit between individual surgeons and formal regulation: setting out what good practice looks like, supporting education and the development of standards, and running projects that no single hospital or practice would undertake alone.
Why a specialty runs a podcast
A specialty society has to reach members who are spread across a large country and who are busy, and much of what it does is organisational rather than clinical: committees, standards, registry work, training policy. That material is poorly suited to a journal and easily ignored as a circular. A recorded conversation is a practical way of explaining what a body is for and who is doing the work, and it can be listened to without setting time aside for it.
It also gives trainees and surgeons outside the committees some idea of how the structures of their own specialty actually function, which is otherwise difficult to find out.
