Recently, I had the privilege of welcoming two enthusiastic medical students from James Cook University, Vasileios Mylonas and Raymond Zhuang, into the operating theatre for a day of orthopaedic shoulder surgery. It was a pleasure to share some insights into my passion for shoulder surgery.

Throughout the day, we covered:Pre-operative planning: The importance of detailed imaging and personalized surgical approaches.

Surgical techniques: Demonstrating procedures such as arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, reverse shoulder replacement, and an interesting arthroscopic plate removal.

Post-operative care: Highlighting the role of rehabilitation in achieving optimal outcomes.

Raymond and Vasileios’ curiosity and engagement with the team reminded me why mentorship is such a fulfilling part of our profession. Shoulder surgery combines precision, innovation, and patient-centered care, and I hope this experience deepens their passion for orthopaedics.

A big thank you to my dedicated theatre team for fostering a supportive and educational environment. It’s always rewarding to work with the next generation of surgeons, especially those with the drive and potential of these James Cook University students.
