Pre-operative skin preparation plays an important role in reducing infection risk during shoulder surgery.
One key step I recommend is the use of benzoyl peroxide prior to your operation.
Cutibacterium acnes is a bacteria that lives in the hair follicles and is more prevalent in the skin around the shoulder than other joints, such as the hip or knee. Left untreated, it can increase the risk of post-surgical infection.
Using benzoyl peroxide significantly reduces the presence of this bacteria on the skin.
My standard protocol:- Use 5% benzoyl peroxide cream or gel, available from your pharmacy.
- Apply twice daily for two days prior to surgery, and once again on the morning of surgery.
For a total of five applications.
This is a simple but highly effective measure to support optimal surgical outcomes.
