Dr Cutbush was invited as faculty to the Royal North Shore Shoulder Symposium in Sydney in September 2015. He gave two presentations. The first was “B Type Glenoid Management”. The glenoid is the socket of the shoulder joint and this talk discussed total shoulder replacement in patients who have difficult glenoid morphology. The role of anatomical shoulder replacement and reverse total shoulder replacement in these difficult situations. The second talk was “Avoiding Infection in Shoulder Arthroplasty”. This talk discussed recent scientific advances in understanding how to avoid infection in shoulder joint replacement surgery. While infection following joint replacement in the shoulder is rare it can be a serious complication if it occurs. In recent years much attention has been given to preventing infection with a bacteria called P. acnes. One of the recent scientific reports in the international literature has been regarding the use of topical benzoyl peroxide applied by the patient to the skin of their shoulder region for 48 hours prior to shoulder surgery. It has been shown that doing this dramatically reduces P. acnes on the patient’s skin and will hopefully eliminate P. acnes as an infective organism.
