Glenoid morphology classification and pre-operative CT scanning in shoulder arthroplasty: what does the data say?

In our latest study with the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry (AOANJRR), we explored how glenoid morphology and CT scanning influence revision rates in shoulder arthroplasty.

Despite growing adoption of pre-operative CT planning, 25% of shoulder replacements are still being performed without it. Surprisingly, our findings show that CT scanning did not impact early post-operative revision rates, across all arthroplasty types (stemmed, stemless and reverse).

This population-level data highlights the power of the AOANJRR in supporting high-quality research. While CT didn’t affect revision rates, we believe future studies should explore links to patient-reported outcomes, surgical planning accuracy, and long-term functional performance.First author: Dr Helen Ingoe – former Brisbane Shoulder Fellow, now Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon and Senior Lecturer at University of Otago.

I highly recommended this for anyone involved in shoulder arthroplasty.
