Dr Carl Basamania from the Seattle, USA talking about his approach to the problematic glenoid in patients undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty May 2018, Brisbane. Dr Basamania is a senior design consultant for Depuy Synthes (Johnson & Johnson). He gave fascinating insights into the design of augmented glenoid prostheses used to correct the glenoid deformity in patients with severely retroverted glenoids. The augmented glenoid is made from high molecular weight polyethylene, as are other glenoid replacement components. However, the augmented glenoid has an asymmetric shape of varying degrees that allows correction of asymmetrically worn glenoid sockets so restoring normal kinematics to the corrected shoulder joint.
