QHSS Scientific Conference November 2014

The Queensland Hand Surgery Society (QHSS) held its annual scientific meeting in November 2014.Dr Cutbush attended as the President of the QHSS. The meeting was a great success with one of the largest numbers of Plastic Surgeons, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Surgical Trainees, Hand Therapists and Physiotherapists attending the conference. The conference had a packed scientific programme with many interesting and discussion provoking papers delivered to the meeting.

Ken Cutbush (President QHSS) with Dr Alok Jhamb (Secretary QHSS)Guest speakers were:International guest Dr Daniel Herren from the Schulthess Clinic, Zurich Switzerland who is a past president of the Swiss Society for Surgery of the Hand editorial board member of the Journal of Hand Surgery and the Journal of Wrist Surgery. Dr Herren gave several talks including an excellent presentation on the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and a presentation on the science of outcome measurement which is quantifying patient outcomes from surgery beyond historical surgical measures to include patient satisfaction and quality of life indicators which are often more important to people undergoing surgical treatment.

National guest Professor Wayne Morrison previously the Hugh Devine Professor and Head of The University of Melbourne Department of Surgery and Head of Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and the Director of the O’Brien Institute since 1993. Professor Morrison has been the Buncke Lecturer at the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, and the Joseph Murray lecturer at Harvard University in Boston USA, the highest honour awarded to Reconstructive Plastic Surgeons worldwide by the American Society of Microsurgery. Professor Morrison gave a well anticipated presentation on tissue engineering, a field in which he is a renowned expert.

Local guest Dr David Stabler is the immediate past president of the Queensland Hand Surgery Society and current president of the Australian Hand Surgery Society. Dr Stabler gave excellent presentations on the management of patients with arthritis of the thumb and on joint replacement for small finger joints of patients.
